Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce says Roy Hodgson should consider including Jermain Defoe in his England squad for Euro 2016. Defoes 15th Premier League goal of the season helped defeat Chelsea 3-2 on Saturday and victory over Everton - live on Sky Sports on Wednesday night - would secure the Black Cats top-flight status. The former West Ham and Tottenham striker has proved instrumental in guiding Sunderland towards safety and, with Danny Welbecks place on the plane to France now in doubt, Allardyce believes 33-year-old Defoe deserves to be considered by Hodgson. Allardyce believes Defoe deserves another chance at international level I just think that, if Roy needed anybody to go along with the experience Jermain has when he needs a goal - maybe not from the start sometimes - Jermain would be your man if he felt he needed it, because he has proven that this year, said the Sunderland boss.Hes had a big run of games that he has not had for a few years and he has been a consistent performer at the highest level again and scored 18 goals in all competitions. That leaves him around the third or the fourth highest scorer in the Premier League in all competitions this year, which is pretty miraculous in a team thats been sat in the bottom three or four all season.Defoe has won 55 caps for England to date, scoring 19 goals. His last cap came as a substitute in the 2-0 friendly home defeat by Chile at Wembley in November 2013. Sam Allardyce looks ahead to Wednesdays match against Everton Allardyce added: For the first time for a few years, hes consistently played week in and week out for us at Sunderland and delivered, and delivered in a position that people questioned that he could deliver in, which is as a central striker on his own. Defoe has been in fine goalscoring form in recent weeks Hes done all that in whats been a struggle for us for most of the year, so its a great credit to him and his professionalism and dedication, and his ability in front of goal.We couldnt have asked for the ball to drop any better than it did for that third goal [against Chelsea] to Jermain. Hed be the one on the pitch we would have all wanted it to drop to, and he didnt disappoint us. EUGENE, Ore. -- McDonalds and Nike are in Boris Berians rearview mirror. His next supersized challenge: The Olympics.Berian earned his spot for Rio by finishing second behind Clayton Murphy in the 800 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Trials on Monday.First, second or third -- it didnt matter, he just wanted to make the Olympic team. He couldnt have imagined of this type of moment when he was serving fries and cooking burgers two years ago.And he especially couldnt have imagined this two weeks ago, when he was embroiled in a lawsuit with Nike over what gear he was wearing. He thought the lawsuit might prevent him from competing at trials. A day before they started, though, Nike dropped the lawsuit and a weight was lifted off Berian, who was wearing fresh-out-of-the-box New Balance spikes. All this came so fast, the 23-year-old said. Its just amazing right now. I have no words. Just so excited.Berian jumped out to the lead about halfway through the race, but was caught at the end by Murphy, who won in a time of 1 minute, 44.76 seconds, with Charles Jock placing third.(Murphy) came out of nowhere, Berian said.In many ways, though, so did Berian.A promising runner out of Widefield High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Berian went to Adams State in Alamosa, where he won indoor and outdoor national titles as a freshman. But he struggled with his eligibility due to grades.Eventually, he dropped out and tried to striike out on his own in the spring of 2014.dddddddddddd He crashed on a friends couch and found a job at McDonalds to subsidize his training. Each day he would ride his bike or walk the nearly three miles to work the early shift, so that he would have time to train in the evening -- for a moment just like this. Its been a stressful four days, but its all worth it, said Berian, who trains with the Big Bear Track Club in California.Still, there were anxious days before the trials, when Berian wasnt sure if he would be allowed to compete given the status of a lawsuit. At a meet in May in Southern California, Berian was sued by Nike for breach of contract. Signed during a breakout 2015 season, his endorsement deal went through Dec. 31, 2015, but gave the company the right to match any other offers. Nike argued that it matched an offer presented by New Balance, which Berian preferred.A judge was scheduled to issue a ruling before Nike dropped the suit.It was annoying, Berian said of the litigation. I just focused on training, kept positive. Thats what I did. Kept all that legal stuff as far away as possible. Now, hell have a date against world-record holder David Rudisha of Kenya and the rest of the international field. Qualifying for the 800 starts Aug. 12.Im just so proud right now, Berian said. ' ' '
