PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- As much as Chris Ash wants to move forward quickly after a 2-10 season first season as Rutgers football coach, he knows that he has to spend time looking back, especially at the lowlights. Its not what anybody wants. Im not satisfied with that, Ash said Wednesday. Well evaluate the overall big picture of the offense; special teams have not been very good. Well assess all aspects of the process and identify ways to do better. The Scarlet Knights allowed an average of nearly 38 points a game. They were outgained in total yardage by an average of 168 yards. There were 21 fumbles -- 12 lost -- and the revolving door at the quarterback position was squeezed with 34 sacks, totaling nearly the length of a football field. They finished on a nine-game losing streak, failing to win a contest in the Big Ten Conference.Six starters will return on offense and eight on defense, and despite all the negative publicity from what took place on the field, including four shutouts by a combined 224 points, Ash remains optimistic.I think we have a very positive building, a very positive program, so I dont listen to the negativity thats out there, he said. Im focused on making our players better every single day.Ash said his nine assistants are scheduled to return because he wants continuity and likes the group.Hes returning, too.Every year I learn something and improve, he said about coaching. Before this year, Ash had been an assistant.Ash said hes been intentional in his growth as a head coach. Its been more about time management and how to handle all the responsibilities of a head coach and how to deal with it, he said. Im a guy involved in Xs and Os to a certain extent and want to continue to be so.Ash said his recruiting pitches are being received well.We have a plan, a vision, and good people on board, the former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator said. Its going to take time and effort, but I think (recruits) have really been believing in our plan and have built great relationships with our coaching staff. He said those relationships can help carry the team through down times. While the staff continues with recruiting, Rutgers this week lost a pair of returning quarterbacks. Hayden Rettig and former starter Chris Laviano are transferring. But the program moves forward.I do believe weve built a team that will compete, Ash said. We didnt do that on the scoreboard every week; we got shut out four times and Im not happy with that at all. But is the first year a disappointment or a loss? No its not.Weve done a lot of positive things in this program, he said. But on Saturdays, and I get it, as we move forward Im gonna be judged by wins and losses.---More AP college football http://collegefootball.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-Top25Calgary Flames Gear . Tom Boyds drunken bust-up with Western Bulldogs teammate Zaine Cordy was a turning point for the young forward, according to stand-in captain Easton Wood. The $6 million recruit was suspended indefinitely by the Bulldogs over the incident in June, but earned a recall to the side before eventually playing a key role in their grand final win over Sydney.I think that was a big turning point for Tom and he learnt a lot about himself, Wood told the RSN Breakfast radio program on Thursday. His growth since that time has been amazing ... his demeanour and his willingness to be open and explore his game and explore himself as a person. Its no surprise to us ... how his form has improved off the back of that as well.Boyd was reported to have lashed out at Cordy after his close friend poured beer on him while he tied his shoelaces during a long drinking session. The 21-year-old, who was taken from Greatter Western Sydney at the end of 2014 on a seven-year deal in exchange for captain Ryan Griffen and the No.dddddddddddd6 draft pick, went a long way towards justifying his hefty contract with a standout grand final performance.Boyd placed third in the Norm Smith medal voting after booting three goals and taking six important contested marks, earning praise from coach Luke Beveridge.Im just so happy for him with all of the external pressure thats come his way through nothing that was in his control, Beveridge said..We talk about whats going to happen with him as he progresses at AFL level with his physical capability ... hes going to continue to blossom. When we needed our players to find their very best performance he found his in a grand final - it was amazing.
